The Wi-Fi Router That Fixed My Smart Home's Coverage

2022 · From the Tech with Asher channel · Watch below or read on

My problem was coverage and latency: a house over 2,500 square feet with smart devices in nearly every room (possibly including the bathroom, I decline to confirm), all streaming data at the same time. People count their laptops and phones and think nine or ten devices; a connected home is routinely three times that. The router has to handle every one of those streams at once, and this ASUS AX82U is the one that fixed mine.

The everyday features that matter

It merges the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands under a single network name, so every device simply joins the one network and lands on the right band by itself, no more choosing between two SSIDs. Four antennas handle the spread, four Ethernet ports wait on the back, one of them a dedicated priority gaming port, and yes, it looks like a spaceship. My wife said so unprompted. The Aura lighting cycles through modes (breathing, wave, gradient, rainbow) from a top button or the app, and you can shut it off entirely; I keep mine green, since the router flashes red on errors and I want red to mean something.

Why Wi-Fi 6 was the right call

This router runs 802.11ax, Wi-Fi 6, the same standard your recent iPhone or Samsung already speaks. Wi-Fi 6E looks skippable, with supply timing suggesting many people will jump straight to Wi-Fi 7 later; buying 6 now means your fastest devices run at full speed today, up to 4,800 megabits on the 5 GHz band (the 2.4 band tops out near 600, so proximity matters). On my half-gig internet plan, it never breaks a sweat.

Setup in five minutes

Press the recessed reset pin for five seconds, join the router's network from your phone, and the ASUS app finds it and walks you through naming your Wi-Fi. That is genuinely all. Afterward the app becomes the control room: a status view with a green light when all is well, live upload and download traffic per band, and every connected device listed.

The family features are the sleeper

For a smart home drowning its old router, this is the cure at a sane price.
