Polk HTS 10 Subwoofer: The Bass That Got Me in Trouble

The first time I saw this subwoofer online, I fell for the way it looked before I heard a note. I wanted bass that could sit in a living room without apologizing for itself, and the Polk HTS 10 delivers exactly that, with one warning: its volume knob goes further than your household's patience. I ended my bass test just before my wife came knocking.

The look that sold me

It comes in a walnut finish and this black one, and the black is the one I chose. Up close the finish reads as genuinely premium, and the driver cone is the showpiece: a copper-toned metallic surface instead of the usual soft fabric, which looks so good that I run mine with the grille off. The grille presses on rather than attaching magnetically (a magnetic mount would have been nicer), so if small children with curious fingers share your living room, press it on and forget it. Underneath, Polk's port design manages the air movement, with the frequency curve literally illustrated on the bottom panel.

Controls and hookup

Around back: a volume dial (I live at about 75 percent), a low-pass crossover control to blend it with your main speakers, a phase switch from 0 to 180 degrees, and both line-in and LFE inputs. Mine does double duty: a simple splitter feeds it from the computer upstairs, while the LFE line ties it into the audio system downstairs, one sub, two jobs. Odd footnote for the electrically curious: the power cord is two-prong, no ground pin, which surprised me on a unit this size.

The test

Ear plugs went in before the music did, and I mean that literally; the full sweep from polite to room-shaking is in the video. What impresses is not just the output but the control: at 200 watts it stays tight rather than boomy, and even pressing on the cone the cabinet feels overbuilt.

The verdict

For movie nights, music, and the sheer furniture-grade look of it, this is an easy recommendation at its price. Just calibrate the volume to your household's tolerance, and maybe warn them before the first test.
